DEAR FRIENDS OF WEST:

We would like to tell you about FRIENDS OF WEST. It is an organization about a year old spearheaded by Alice Saudargas, wife of the late Coach Alex Saudargas.  The school, formerly West High School, is now a middle school. The building has already been designated as a local land mark. FRIENDS OF WEST has adopted the motto, "Restoring West--The Tradition--The Building--The Spirit."

The thrust of the committee is to bring back the former grace and beauty of the building through various projects. The first phase is creating a memorial garden around the flagpole in the front of the building, with shrubbery, trees, plantings and a paving brick area with the name of West Alumni who gave their lives in World War II, Korea and Viet Nam, imprinted upon the bricks. Another project being considered is cleaning the unique Barloga created detail above the exterior doors. A memorabilia room has already been established in the school. It holds trophies and memorabilia of West and Central High and is an ongoing project worked on by alumni volunteers and members of the present Junior National Honor Society and is available for class reunions to tour.

The committee has a list of ambitious and worthwhile future projects that, when accomplished, will restore West to its original state of importance and dignity in its neighborhood setting. At this point we are looking for interested persons (alumni, staff, neighbors of West, present students and their parents) to lend their talents, guidance, ideas and financial help to further this vision.
