Week of the Young Child: Family Friday

​Engaging and celebrating families is at the heart of supporting our youngest learners. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) applauds the role of a family as a young child’s first and most important teacher. For the final day of the Week of the Young Child, we are focusing our activities on families and how you can learn together with your child.

Here are some ways to engage your young children in learning while they are at home. These activities should fit into your daily routine, and are suggestions to expand your interactions:

• Math: Measure your child with a piece of string or yarn. Cut the string to the length of your child. Have your child measure items around the house with the string, and predict if the item is longer or shorter than their string.
• Literacy: Have your child choose one of their favorite books to read together. When reading the book, ask questions about what they think would happen if the story changed (had a different ending or problem). Have your child draw a picture of their new idea for the story.
• Physical Development: Create an obstacle course in your house or yard. Have your child help you pick out items to jump over, crawl through, walk on, etc. Practice the obstacle course with your child.
