Week of the Young Child: Tasty Tuesday

The Week of the Young Child looks a little different this year with social distancing and stay-at-home orders. Even with these challenges, it is still important to spotlight young children, their families and caregivers, and their educators. Today’s Tasty Tuesday spotlight focuses on meal times at home.

Spend some time together in the kitchen today. When you are cooking together you are introducing and reinforcing math and literacy skills. Find simple ways for your child to assist with meal prep, clean-up and other meal time routines. Here are a few ways to have fun while learning in the kitchen:

  • Math: Have your child set the table by counting each person and then placing the correct number of plates, cups and silverware at the table.
  • Literacy: Have your child create name tags for the table. Using scrap paper, assist your child in writing each family member’s name on a piece of paper. They can decorate each name tag and then place them at each seat at the table.
  • Science: Talk about the variety of foods that you are eating. Discuss the texture, look and taste of each item.

Be sure to have fun together!

This blog post is part of a series celebrating the Week of the Young Child. The WOYC is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children to focus public attention on early learning, young children, their teachers, families and communities.
