High School Students: Sign Up Now for Art In Motion
Last month a group of RPS 205 high school students kicked off their first week at Art In Motion camp at 317 Art Collective with mandala making! Students learned about the history of mandalas, then drew and colored their own. They also worked on T-shirts. The students created their own design, then drew and painted their own Art In Motion shirts!
Students learned about the history of yoga and its philosophy. The students received their own yoga mats (in their color choice) and then learned to settle into their bodies, connect to their breath, and find a comfortable seat. We learned chair yoga that they can practice at their desk, including posture, breathing exercises, and great stretches for the neck, shoulders and hips.
In week two, the students made an autobiographical collage with a watercolor background using photos of themselves and some of their favorite things. They also learned warrior and balance yoga poses and started working on prompted journaling based on yoga philosophy.
In the week leading up to Halloween, the students made an acrylic painting of a skeleton kitty! In yoga, they learned about Yin and Yang energy, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and completed a Yin yoga sequence.
This week students will make a Retablo with boxes and polymer clay in honor of Día de los Muertos and learn about Vinyasa yoga (moving with the breath).
During the last two weeks of the session, students will work on more complex art projects as well as learn and move through a complete Vinyasa yoga sequence.
The six week-long after-school program is free to RPS 205 students thanks to the American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ARP ESSER) funds. Students meet three times each week.
Families can still sign their students up for the current session. The second semester of classes begins on Nov. 29 through Jan. 16, with a two week break in alignment with RPS 205 winter break. Registration is open now: Art In Motion Semester 2.
