Rockford Reads Volunteers Connect with Gregory Students on Zoom
For 18 years the Rockford Rotary Club has partnered with Rockford Public Schools and the Rockford Public Library for the Rockford Reads program. Once a week program volunteers read with second graders at various RPS 205 elementary schools. The results of this program have been amazing, not only academically but socially and emotionally for the students.
With the COVID-19 global health crisis, this program stopped, as did all other volunteer efforts through the district. We have recently been able to resume our efforts to work on reading skills with second graders via Zoom at Gregory Elementary School. Our volunteers go through the RPS 205 fingerprinting and vetting process and then are assigned to a teacher who then selects two or three students who may be in need of extra reading attention. We are very excited to be working with these students again! The need is greater than ever as resources are stretched to meet the needs of both in-person and remote learning.
