Auburn High School senior Puranjay Gupta has won the 2022 National Merit Scholarship. Jay will receive the prestigious $2,500 National Merit scholarship award and designation as a Merit Scholar. He plans to study medicine after graduation from Auburn in June. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced a group of winners this week.

The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit $2,500 scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Auburn seniors Alexander Ferry and Puranjay Gupta were named finalists in February for the scholarship; they were announced as semifinalists in September for the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They are both in the Gifted Academy at Auburn High School.

National Merit plans to announce another 4,000 recipients of corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards in the coming months. By the end of this year’s competition, about 7,500 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $28 million.
