Middle & High School Schedule Change Starts Feb. 1

RPS 205 middle and high school families and staff,

We are updating our middle and high school attendance plans to add another day for in-person attendance and instruction. We’ve been working with the Rockford Education Association, our teacher union, to increase student engagement and achievement. Our goal is to increase the time our students directly connect with their teachers and staff, so we can improve student success.

We’re making this change after collecting data and feedback from families, students, teachers, principals and staff. We’re consistently hearing that our current model – using synchronous and asynchronous instruction – isn’t working for many students. This new plan follows a shortened schedule and allows students to connect every day with their teachers and classmates, instead of only a few days each week.

Starting Monday, Feb. 1 – the start of the second semester – middle and high school students enrolled in in-person instruction will attend school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week, instead of only Mondays and Thursdays. All students will connect with their teachers and classmates remotely on Tuesdays and Thursdays in real time. Here’s how the plan will work:

In-person students: Students enrolled in the hybrid model of in-person and remote instruction will attend school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week. Students will attend shortened class periods of 25-minutes each. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students will connect remotely and in real time, much like during our adaptive pause in December.

Remote-only students: Students enrolled in remote-only instruction will connect every day with their teachers in real time. Remote students will also attend shortened class periods of 25-minutes each.

Early dismissal: RESA Middle School will dismiss at 1:10 p.m.; all other middle schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. High schools will dismiss at 12:08 p.m. Lunch will still be provided. After dismissal, all middle and high school students will connect remotely for additional enrichment and support. Each building principal and administrative team will share specific schedule information with their students, staff and families in the coming days.

Special programs: Administrators at Thurgood Marshall School (grades 5-8) and the middle school program at Two-Way Language Immersion at Barbour will each share a school-specific schedule with families soon. The schedule at Maria Montessori at Marsh will not change.

Self-contained special education: Schedules for self-contained special education classrooms will not change. Students will continue to attend five days each week and follow their same start/dismissal times. Middle and high school students will not attend school this Friday, Jan. 22, for a district remote planning day.

No school on Friday, Jan. 22: Middle and high school students will not connect remotely on Friday, Jan. 22. This will be a day off for middle and high school students. Middle and high school staff will participate in professional development and planning for remote learning to prepare for the second semester. (Montessori middle school students will still attend on Friday, Jan. 22.)

Thank you again for your continued cooperation, flexibility and patience.

Sincerely,

Ehren Jarrett
