RPS 205 to Launch International Baccalaureate (IB) Candidate School

RPS 205 will launch an International Baccalaureate (IB) Candidate School in the 2023-2024 school year at Conklin Elementary School. The internationally recognized program is for children aged 3-19. RPS 205 will start with an elementary school and has plans to grow and expand. 
 
Students in the IB Primary Years Programme will:

• Take responsibility for their own learning.
• Ask challenging questions, think critically, and learn skills across all subject areas.
• Be active in their communities and take their learning beyond the classroom.
• Think globally and develop respect for all cultures.
• Learn another language. Conklin will include a Spanish component for all students and continue with its Spanish speaking (TBE) classrooms. 

“This is an exciting opportunity for families in the northwest side of our district to choose a special program that’s close to home,” said Superintendent Ehren Jarrett. “Adding an IB candidate school to our already robust menu of special programs is not only great for our district, it’s great for our community.”

Conklin Elementary School students currently in English or Spanish speaking classes – in grades K-4 – will have the first opportunity to apply to attend the IB candidate school. The application window opens this Friday, Nov. 18, and closes March 1, 2023.

Students who attend McIntosh, Welsh and West View elementary schools in grades K-4 can apply for any remaining open seats. That application window opens in January and closes March 10, 2023. Students currently in the Conklin, McIntosh, Welsh or West View attendance zones can apply for a seat through the 2023-2024 kindergarten lottery. Siblings will be given priority for available seats. That application window is January through March 10, 2023.

Attend a meeting to learn more

To apply for a seat, families must attend a meeting to learn about the IB candidate school. Families can join a meeting at any of the schools, even if it’s not their current school. All meetings will include presentations in English and Spanish.
