Update on the 2021-22 School Year

RPS 205 families and staff,

I’d like to share a reminder for our students, staff and families as we close out the 2020-21 school year, in addition to an update about the 2021-22 school year.

Mask reminder: Right now, masks and social distancing are still required for all students, staff and visitors in Rockford Public Schools. Despite the updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the governor’s office about relaxing mask requirements, the directions are unchanged at schools. We will continue to follow guidance from the CDC, Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois Department of Public Health and the Winnebago County Health Department.

In-person instruction: Administrators are planning for the upcoming school year, and several families have asked about remote instruction for the 2021-22 school year. We’re following both state and local guidance to prepare in-person instruction for all students in the upcoming school year. In-person instruction and having a face-to-face, direct connection with our students is what’s best for academic progress and social emotional support. All families, from Early Childhood through high school, should plan for in-person instruction when school starts in September.

Virtual instruction: We’re following direction from the State Board of Education to provide temporary virtual instruction to students who are under quarantine because of a COVID-19 close contact and are not eligible for the vaccine under current CDC guidance. RPS 205 will not offer a remote-only option, aside from what would normally be offered for eligible students pursuant to state or federal law.

Vaccines: While a COVID-19 vaccine is not required for students in the upcoming school year, we want families to consider the vaccine for eligible students and their families. The vaccine is currently available for students 12 and older. Learn more and sign up for a vaccination clinic: wchd.org/covid-19

Vaccinated students: If your student has been vaccinated for COVID-19, please contact your school nurse so student records can be updated. At this time, vaccinated students who are a close contact to a positive COVID-19 case do not need to quarantine.

Enrollment & registration: Students who are new to RPS 205 must first enroll in the district: Visit rps205.com/enroll for more information. All students must register each year ahead of the start of school, and registration materials are available now: rps205.com/parents/registration

We will continue to share information about health and safety guidelines for the 2021-22 school year in the coming weeks and months. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Ehren Jarrett
