Barbour Dia De Las Muertos

By: Heather Schlueter

Two-Way Language Immersion at Barbour, the only 90/10 two-way language immersion school in the Rockford region, partnered with the Dia de los Muertos celebration hosted by Domingos en el Parque at the UW Sports Factory on Sunday, October 26.

Through the gift of two languages, multiple cultures and arts integration, Middle School Spanish Teacher Lesly Carreño and Middle School Art Teachers Stephanie Kyarsgaard and Heather Schlueter taught projects about Spanish heritage art, altars and alebrijes. Student artwork and writing was then exhibited for the Rockford community at the Dia de los Muertos celebration.

This opportunity allows heritage and non-heritage Spanish speakers in the program an opportunity to learn about the importance of their family cultures and ancestries and how they can celebrate them together through creative processes and learning.
