Dr. Larry Huff

A potential new chapter for Rockford.

After a nationwide search shaped by deep community input, the Rockford Public Schools Board of Education will be considering the appointment of Dr. Larry Huff as the next Superintendent of RPS 205.

Pending board approval, he’ll begin his new role on July 1, 2026.

Dr. Huff brings nearly two decades of experience in public education, most recently serving as superintendent of Elkhart Community Schools in Indiana, where he led major gains in student learning, teacher support systems, and school-community partnerships.

A Search Grounded in Rockford’s Values

The Board launched a national search earlier this year with BWP & Associates, drawing applicants from across the country.

But the process wasn’t just about resumes, it was about listening.

Over the course of several months, the Board invited feedback from families, staff, students, and community partners. That feedback became the foundation for the leadership qualities, priorities, and values that mattered most to Rockford.

“From day one, this was about finding the right leader for our city and our schools,” said Board President Paul Carpenter. “Dr. Huff stood out not only because of what he’s accomplished, but because he leads with clarity, heart, and a deep respect for the people he serves.”

A Leader Who Builds and Belongs

Dr. Huff’s work in Elkhart drew recognition statewide and nationally.

Under his leadership:

  • IREAD literacy proficiency jumped over 16 points in one year—one of the largest increases in Indiana

  • Instructional systems were strengthened across all grade levels

  • Work-based learning programs and real-world student experiences expanded dramatically

He was named one of Education Magazine’s Top Ten Superintendents of 2026 and received the Thought Leadership Award from the Intercultural Institute for championing equity and innovation in education.

But beyond the accolades, Dr. Huff is known for being accessible, thoughtful, and committed to helping others grow.

“This is a community with a strong identity and a deep commitment to its schools,” said Dr. Huff. “I’d be honored to join the team at RPS 205, and I look forward to listening, learning, and building alongside students, staff, families, and community members.”

About Dr. Huff

Dr. Huff began his career in 2008 as an elementary teacher. He went on to serve as assistant principal, principal, chief academic officer, and eventually superintendent.

He led teams in both Indianapolis and Elkhart with a strong focus on instruction, equity, and student-centered decision-making.

  • B.A. in Liberal Studies, University of Indianapolis (2006)

  • M.A.T., Marian University (2007)

  • Doctorate in Educational Leadership, Oakland City University (2020)

If the board votes to approve, the district will coordinate opportunities for students, staff, and families to connect with Dr. Huff and help shape a smooth transition.

“We are proud of the thoughtful and transparent process that brought us here,” said Carpenter. “This moment reflects the strength of our community and our shared belief in the future of Rockford Public Schools.”
